6 Natural Oils that are Good for Your Hair

Incorporating natural oils on my hair has pretty much changed my hair care routine for the best. My hair is healthier, shinier, longer and thicker and with me being a naturally curly girl oil and water are pretty much my curly hair maintenance BFFs! Some folks think that oil is bad for your hair, but the truth of the matter is there are some oils that are essential to your hair’s health.

1. Olive Oil

Olive oil is the godmother of hair oil. It works wonders as a pre-poo treatment. I douse my hair in it, put a plastic cap on (and top it off with a scarf and wear it overnight), then I shampoo and condition as normal. It’s also a great deep conditioner and moisturizer for your hair. This oil locks in moisture and lubricates thirsty hair cuticles. It’s lightweight and helps to fight dryness in both relaxed and natural hair. It also has antioxidants which combat hair thinning and loss.

2. Rosemary Oil

I like easy, simple beauty routines and multi-functional products are a favorite of mine! If ever there were a hair oil with dual benefits that should be a mainstay in your beauty cabinet, rosemary oil should be on your radar! It cleanses the scalp and strengthens your hair while boosting shine. Hello lovely, lush locks!  This oil is perfect for tackling a dry scalp and ridding the scalp of dandruff. 3. Coconut Oil

If you’re anything like me, then you know that coconut oil makes everything better: Your hair, skin, nails, food, bank account, relationships…everything! I kid, I kid! Coconut oil reduces protein loss, thickens the hair, adds moisture to split ends and replenishes damaged hair. I get a lot of dryness and flaking of the scalp and this is my go-to oil to reduce these issues. I also add a tiny  bit to my styling routine when I want a little shine, but don’t overdo it.

 4. Castor Oil

Have you ever experienced thinning hair and wondered what you could use to help? Well, you might want to try castor oil! It strengthens individual hair strands, which prevents breakage and hair loss. Its anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties protect hair and scalp from infection. It has Omega-9 fatty acids that prevent the scalp from drying and stimulate hair growth. It’s also a humectant so no worries for dryness–it locks in moisture. Castor oil is very thick in consistency, so some people thin it can be heavy on the hair. My go-to use of it is on my scalp, especially around my edges and the nape of my neck to help with curing and avoiding breakage and thinning.

5. Marula oil

Marula oil is a rare ingredient that’s harvested in South Africa. It is made from the fruit of the marula tree. The benefits are it’s great for moisturizing the hair without weighing it down. It is rich in essential fatty acids and antioxidants antioxidants vitamin C, vitamin E, and flavonoids. It’s lightweight and won’t leave your hair heavy or greasy. 6. Avocado Oil

Thinning hair and itchy scalp an issue? If so, you should check out avocado oil. It’s nutrient-rich and helps with thinning and scalp irritation.
