Hey F&B lovers! I’m so excited because I’m doing the first “Ask Margo” post of the year! *round of applause*

This time around I’m tackling the issue of getting/maintaining healthy. This is a topic that’s always brought to my attention by readers, friends and other fellow beautynistas. Of course, I’ve got you covered on this topic! Check out some of my go-to healthy hair tips below.

Live a Healthy Lifestyle

What you do to your body and put inside of your body plays a large role in the health of your hair. Believe it or not, in order to flourish, your hair needs proper nutrition just like your body does!

Have a poor diet? Then, expect your hair to look dull and unhealthy. Some of the main Vitamins that your hair needs are A, B, C , D and E. Minerals like calcium, zinc and iron are also great for aiding with the growth and the strengthening of hair.

One of my go-to healthy hair tips is to drink lots of water! At least 8 glasses a day (you’ll seriously see a difference in your hair, skin nails and even your waistline as a result!)

Embrace Protective Styles

I’m a curly-haired girl, and one of the best things to ever happen to my hair regimen is protective hairstyles. Some easy-to-maintain and adorable styles are braids (I’m currently rocking long Solange Knowles inspired box braids), twists, buns, and even hair weaves. Protective styles are a great way to limit the amount of stress and tension that you put on your hair, especially the ends (which are one of the most the most fragile parts of our hair).

Give Your Hot Tools  a Break

I’ve fallen victim to the trials of heat damage and bouncing back from it is no fun! I’m not saying that you should never use heat on your hair. (If you want to cut out all heat use, then go for it!) I’m just suggesting that instead of flat ironing or blow drying your hair daily, maybe you can cut back to once every week or so. Your hair will thank you for the break.

Wash It

Dirty hair is totes no bueno! Product build-up and a less-than desirable scent are not only a beauty faux pas, but it’s also no good for your hair. You don’t have to wash it every day (I actually wouldn’t advise you to!) but you should cleanse your hair a couple of times every 7-10 days. (This is just what I go by, some people may feel the need or desire to wash more often.) Make sure that you condition your hair after washing and also add in a moisturizer to seal in the conditioner. Be sure to pay close attention to your ends.

Find A Great Hair Oil To Use

Yeah, yeah! I know you think. Your hair will be heavy and greasy if you apply oil to it, but this is not always the case. Portion and consistency are key! Oil can be used on all hair types and unlike grease, lightweight oils can be total lifesavers for protecting hair from damage or for restoring damaged hair to a healthy state.

One of my fave ways to lock in moisture is to pre-poo my hair with olive oil before washing it. This helps to lock in essential oils that the scalp naturally produces. Some shampoos can be far too harsh on your tresses and can completely strip it of moisture. The result is brittle locks that are prone to breakage.

Moroccan oil and coconut oil are also awesome alternatives that can be used as heat protectants and shine serums.

These are just some of the things that I’ve found to keep my hair looking and feeling good. What are your go-to healthy hair tips?

Ciao Bellas,

Margo
